1. Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most potent anti inflammatory foods. In addition to decreasing inflammation, turmeric decreases pathogenic microbes in the gut, thus creating a more balanced microbioma. Turmeric is an incredible antioxidant and protects the cells from the effects of free radicals which damage the cells, proteins and DNA. Toxins from the environment are an issue for many of us and turmeric can help with improving detoxification. We have experienced that turmeric greatly improves symptoms of pain due to the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-microbial effects.

2. Ginger

Ginger is a great anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Many of us with leaky gut have a Microbiome that is very unbalanced (dysbiosis). Ginger can help keep the pathogenic bacteria in check.

Nausea may be one of your leaky gut symptoms. Another benefit of ginger is its anti nausea effect. You may find that there is nothing better then ginger tea to relieve nausea.

Ginger is a powerful immune booster. However, we do not want overstimulate the immune system and so we recommend using it intermittently: use it daily for a week and then take a week off before starting it again. Using this system has work great for our clients!

3. Onion

Onion is a powerful anti-inflammatory and a simple onion broth can do wonders for the inflamed, leaky gut. We recommend drinking it on a daily basis, perhaps drinking it in place of having your evening meal. Some have found that it doesn’t take long for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and blowing to subside once they start implementing onion broth on a daily basis.

Other health benefits of onions are that they are antimicrobial, anti-allergic, anti-histaminic and antioxidant.

We recommend getting half a raw onion a day into the diet. A delicious way to do this is to marinate thinly sliced onion with lemon and salt prior to mixing it in with a salad.

4. Garlic

Garlic is one of the most powerful antimicrobials. Garlic greatly decreases pathogenic bacteria and is also a source of prebiotics. Prebiotics are foods that feed the beneficial bacteria and create a great environment for your microbiome.

Garlic has an immune-modulatory effect, meaning it will calm down the over-active antibodies. In addition garlic is a powerful anti-inflammatory and detoxifying food.

Whether we use it raw or cooked, garlic always has a powerful effect. A word of caution: do not eat raw garlic alone on an empty stomach. It may cause damage to the digestive lining

5. Aloe Vera

The protective and healing benefits of aloe have long been known. To heal the leaky gut, we recommend taking it in small amounts to help coat and protect the lining of the digestive system. Other benefits of aloe vera include its powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and hepatoprotective effects.
