The Sun Does More Than Give Us Light
While we all know the sun provides us light and warmth everyday, some people may not realize that the sun is the most potent and unlimited source of vitamin D on Earth. In fact full-body exposure to the sun for 30 minutes produces up to 20,000 IUs! The extra IUs get stored in your body’s fat cells, so they aren’t wasted. This is incredible news as vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common contributors of disease.
“Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.” Ecclesiastes 11:7
Don’t Take Sunshine for Granted
Beyond the incredible source of vitamin D that the sun provides the benefits don’t stop there. Sun exposure increases circulation, increases the number and efficiency of blood vessels in the skin, lowers blood pressure, and increases oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. As if that isn’t enough sunshine also stabilizes blood sugar levels, improves liver function, increases the number of white blood cells, and even lowers cholesterol. Sunshine is a powerful healer, take advantage of it!
Tips for Sunbathing
- Always avoid sunburn and keep exposure to below the point of skin reddening
- 10AM – 3PM is the time that presents the highest risk for sunburn so if you’re prone to burning you may want to time your exposure
- Glass filters out 95% of beneficial UV light so do not sunbathe behind glass
- Start with 4 minutes on each quadrant; front, back, and sides when sunbathing
We hope you found this educational and inspired you to get some more summer sun before the colder weather starts fully setting in.
